We've discussed the importance of habits before. And the way technology can help. So let's dive into details on how to use the Apple Watch to get you to stick to your daily movement routine.

Notice I said daily movement, not exercise. That's because we need to move, we don't necessarily need to "exercise" in the traditional sense.

So you don't have to do that, unless that's your thing. If it is, do that, I'm not judging. (I totally am though).

But yea, the goal is to move and to do something that elevates your heart-rate and burns a few calories. You know what's good for that? Walking.

And all you have to do is go outside and take a walk. This is something you can do and fit into your schedule. Take a walk in the morning, walk to work (if you can), take a walk after you come home or in the evening.

I'm not talking about a stroll, though, although they can be perfectly nice. I'm talking about a brisk walk, pushing yourself a little bit more every day.

And just pick a direction and walk in that direction for 15-20 minutes and then turn back. It is that simple.

Of course it is more entertaining to have some sort of goal or variety, so planning ahead is nice.

15 minutes is a relatively easy 1km walk. That's like a normal main street. Back and forth is 2km.

You can fit this into your lunch hour, which also has the added benefit of your warmed up muscles absorbing the glucose produced by your lunch lowering the risk of any potential spikes.

Take to the (main) streets

Most towns, cities and neighborhoods have some version of Main Street.

The successful ones are pedestrian friendly and reasonably condensed - likely a perfect 1km 15 minute walk.

Taking to the streets also has the added benefit of grounding you in your society - or at least that's how I feel - as the more often you walk a specific route the more you get to know the people. You start saying hi, you start frequenting the markets, stores and cafés and that helps make your routine more fun and lowers your stress levels to boot.

Exercise vs. Move goals

The Apple watch has two goals for you to reach - and you should strive for both.

When you go out for a walk you should start the exercise app on the watch and tap the "Outdoor walk". That says you are now going to do something to exercise. But that is not enough to give you exercise points, you actually need to exert yourself, by reaching a sustained higher level heart-rate for a period of time. Otherwise you're just out for a stroll.

And you should try to do 30 minutes of watch approved exercise every day. And since that means taking a walk, not having to go to the gym, this is something you can get in the habit of doing every day.

The other goal it sets is the movement goal. Any movement at any time during the day will count towards the goal. Especially exercise movement. But beware, the more you move the better you get at it and the watch will move the goal posts. Which is kind of sort of mean, but good for you.
